KOK: Bigger. Harder. More fun.
Wow look! It’s only been a year and a half since we last posted! I promise that it won’t happen again… maybe. In all seriousness we will try to post every 1 to 3 months going forward.
Kids of Karendow is now 2 and a half years into development (I guess this is the first time we have formally announced it on the blog).
For those of you who don’t know, Kids of Karendow is a traditional indie JRPG. It has been described as Garbage Pail Kids meets Final Fantasy…and I have to say I really like that description.
It features:
A long and intricate storyline with humor, twists, and fun
An active time battle system similar to that of the Grandia series
Mini games!
A cooking and crafting system
Quiz babies!
Side quests and other hidden stuff throughout the game
The COVID-19 related lockdowns of the real world has maybe given the development a bit of a boost by allowing for more time to work on the game and also making it easier to find more help on artwork.
So how far along is development?
Pretty far…I guess? Overall? Here are some made up numbers that “feel” right.
Combat system - 100% complete
Menu system - 90% complete
Over world system - 80% complete
Map system - 100%
Story implemented in the game - 10% complete
Artwork - 10% complete
Enemies - 10% complete
Items - 25% complete
Magic - 10% complete
Skills - 5% complete
Combos - 2% complete
Music and sound complete - 15%
Mini games - 0%
So as you can see by those numbers we have spent most of the time on the core mechanics and now we just need to fill the game with content. The good news is that, in theory, that should go faster.
The original development team from the DOS version of Kids of Karendow from 2000 have mostly contributed to this game. The credits so far include:
Blair Pyle - Director, producer, developer, enemy artwork, character artwork, environment artwork, story
Gary Ng - All things music, story
Brad Pyle - Character art
Isa Deu - Environment and tile artwork
Nick Whitten - NPC artwork
The good news is that we have a demo on Itch.io and we will be releasing another one at the end of this month with some bug fixes and additional improvements. Our Steam page is almost ready so with the next demo we will publish that as well. Let me clear though - The demo won’t be available on Steam at this time.
So when will the game be ready? I know everyone wants to play the whole game by yesterday, so I will tell you we are not announcing a release date yet. This is going to be a large game. Probably bigger than some other indie RPGs currently being developed. I promise you this will not be abandoned though. It will get done as we have been consistently making progress on the game for the last 2.5 half years…a few hours…everyday.
